Route: Port Clinton to Lehigh Gap on the AT (PA)

Location
Pennsylvania, US
Description

This is a very popular 40-mile segment of the Appalachian Trail, which cuts through the heart of some of the rockiest segments of the entire length ("Rocksylvania"). This FKT is the combination of 2 AT segments, PA 61 to PA 309, and PA 309 to Lehigh Gap.  With 6700 feet of total elevation gain, the course is split between about 10-15 miles of nearly impossible-to-run segments of rock hopping and rock crawling, approximately 10 miles of moderately difficult-to-run segments, and about 15-20 miles of very "runable" fast and flat sections. Several of Pennsylvania's most famous overlooks dot the course with views to the east and west on clear days, including The Pinnacle, Pulpit Rock, "The Cliffs", Bear Rocks and the overly popular Bake Oven Knob. The start of the run aggressively climbs to the ridge top, but then the course gently rolls up and down with no major climbs for the rest of the route. The final few miles are a semi-aggressive descent into Lehigh Gap. This FKT officially starts at the Trailhead at Port Clinton, right next to HWY 61 on Blue Mountain Road, and ends at the trailhead parking lot to the next north-bound AT segment across the bridge on HWY 873 and at the end of the short dirt road called Appalachian Trail. The route may be run in either direction, and the trailheads are within about 50' of the same elevation.
