On March 23, 2021 I ran the Rainy Lake Trail between Voyageurs National Park and International Falls in Minnesota. I left my bike at the Chamber of Commerce in International Falls then drove to the Rainy Lake Visitor Center to start.
I started at 9:38am in shorts and a t-shirt. It was in the upper 30s but sunny, calm, and dry, a beautiful morning. Most of the snow that had been on the trail was gone. I didn’t see anyone else in the park. I crossed Highway 11 and turned left. This trail shares space with the road for a few miles, for now anyway. I could catch periodic views of the lake and Canada on the other side. Ice was piled up on the shore and around docks in places from the winter.
The fastest similar run I could find on Strava had an average pace of 8:53, so that was my pace to beat. I got to the western terminus at 11:30. This route could go way faster. I ran by myself, unsupported. I consumed about 300 calories and 24 ounces of water. I’ll probably go back to try an out-and-back of this route.
