Report
I’m still loopy & plan to write a full report. I started early in the morning around 3:35am. I saw only a few people on trail. Conditions were a mix of intermittent snowy areas, bare rock, some “post holes” and lots of ice! I wore running shoes and micro spikes. I carried 4 liters of water with ekectolytes which worked well. I believe I beat the current men’s winter unsupported FKT by around 5-hours.
Comments
This weekend, I intended to hike my first winter Pemi Loop after hiking it in other seasons. Being a conservationist, the Pemigewasset Wilderness has always been a special place to me. It’s rugged, remote, and filled with the essence of the White Mountains. I’ve spent a lot of time in there over the years to recharge from long weeks at work and school. The night before, out of curiosity, I happened to check the FKT record and was surprised to see it had layer dormant at over 16 hours for a year. Being a 36 year old who just started running last year, I was excited to have the opportunity to get on the board for such a trail at a time when records in the whites are getting thinner by the day - so I went for it. I carried quite a bit of winter gear, food and four liters of water with the intent of having a safe, comfortable and enjoyable experience while taking the record and promoting it for someone to beat sooner than later. I took some breaks and enjoyed having the mountains nearly to myself. Only a couple days later, I was excited to see a guy properly tighten up the record with a strong run. I hope my run inspires other “average joes” who like the Whites to get one a trail and challenge themselves.
