As an “import” Amsterdammer, I’d had this FKT on my radar for quite a while, but I’d never found the right moment for it. With a day off thanks to Ascension Day and favorable weather conditions (read: not too hot and not too windy), it was now or never. The perfect way to “celebrate” my five-year anniversary in Amsterdam.
After work, I took the bus to Central Station to catch the ferry to Amsterdam North for the start. To do it fully unsupported, I carried a pack weighing around 4 kg with some warm clothes, 2 liters of water, 8 Liège waffles, 5 Snickers bars, a few gels, and some sports drink powder.
The first few kilometers the legs didn’t feel good, and after about 25 kilometers I saw a sign saying “9 km to Amsterdam.” For a moment I flirted with the idea of calling it quits, but thankfully I didn’t.
As the kilometers passed and darkness fell, I started feeling better and better. Nutrition went smoothly, the pace stayed steady, and the surroundings were beautiful and quiet. Just before the Markerwaarddijk, I made a 1,5-kilometer detour toward Enkhuizen station to refill my water bottles at a public tap.
The Markerwaarddijk was mostly just long and monotonous, with headwinds and rain, but I managed to stay in a good rhythm. I also handled the long straight stretches between Lelystad and Almere surprisingly well.
With around 30 kilometers left to go, the rain and wind picked up heavily, leaving me soaked to the bone. Since a sub-16 finish was still within reach, I kept pushing myself to continue running. Successfully!
A lap around the Markermeer is definitely recommended, and it’s especially popular among cyclists. Just make sure to check the weather conditions carefully beforehand, because you’re exposed to the elements the entire time. Feel free to contact me if you want to try this route!
