I started around dawn (6:27 AM) from Swinging Bridge and made my way up the Upper Falls trail to Yosemite Point. I only passed one hiker on the way up, which, I honestly was expecting more pre-dawn people. I reached the overlook point at about 1h 25min, which is also when the sun finally hit the upper falls area. The wind up top was surprisingly cold but I knew that the sun would warm me up (too) quickly. I tried to keep my descent speed more on the conservative side to prevent blowing out my legs, which is honestly hard to do on these trails! I reached Camp 4 at about 2h 26min. I stopped at my van to refuel before making my way across Swinging Bridge and to the Four Maile trail. I was very grateful that this side of the valley pretty much stays in the shade. With the highs being in the 80s still, the shade meant everything! I believe I hit the top of the Four Mile trail at 4h 1min, which meant my ascent time from the bridge was very similar to my ascent time up to Yosemite Point. I was very happy with that. My legs were starting to feel all the climbing, however, so I very much looked forward to the descent. The route description mentions turning around at the upper Four Mile TH, but I felt that reaching an overlook more appropriately matched the endeavor of reaching Yosemite Point (an overlook). So I went to the Geologic Overlook area where there's a telescope to peer at Tis-sa-ack (Half Dome), which isn't very far at all from the TH, maybe 50 yards, if that? Anyway, I really did think that I had a good chance of matching the men's time, so I let loose on the descent. 47-ish minutes later, I was back on Swinging Bridge for a total time 4:49:41. I did miss the men's time by 2:47 but was very stoked to have gotten so close. Overall, the experience was really neat, especially since I used to live and work in the valley for the concessionaire many years ago. These trails have been favorites of mine for a long time, but I'd yet to connect them both in a day like this. The trails are technical, steep, and constantly provide stunning views. I'm very grateful to have been able to try hard while visiting the valley for Facelift, an annual event that is all about cleaning up. My husband and I collected 8.5 pounds of trash during our 4 hours of volunteering! Anyone who visits should definitely check this event out and consider giving back in this way.
