Description

Often referred to as the "Sidewalk in the Sky", the Asulkan Traverse is one of the most popular alpine traverses in Glacier National Park, offering moderate scrambling on solid rock with thrilling exposure and spectacular views. Though much of the route is easy and exposed class 2, the route involves some technical scrambling/climbing, with the crux of the route being a short climb up the North Ridge of The Dome graded at YDS 5.4.

From the Illecillewaet parking lot, ascend the Abbott Ridge trail to the end. Continue along the ridge over Mt. Abbott, Mt. Afton, The Rampart, The Dome, and the three peaks of Mt. Jupiter until you reach the Asulkan pass at the foot of the SW ridge of Youngs Peak. Turn north and descend the Asulkan glacier, or the rock adjacent to it, to the Asulkan hut. Continue down the Asulkan valley trail back to the parking lot.
