Description

Starting near the famous Worsborough Reservoir that once fed the canals of the Dearne valley mining and industrial works, You head up the old Trans penine railway line, following the route that once carried thousands of tonnes of coal each week to to the homes of England. Turning right and heading through Hall Royd Wood (minding your step as not to upset the adders) before crossing through Silkstone common and over the fields passed the historic Barnsley Boys camp site where the Barnsley regiment trained before they went to war, dropping down in to the village of Silkstone - and back onto the old mining paths that led the pit ponies to the mine of Silkstone - Stop for a quick refreshment at Pot house Hamlets before we go off road again along more Old railway line routes before what is usually a muddy Hugset wood and to the highest point on the route.

Through the village of Higham and Redbrook before we get a lot of single track running on our way to Athersley a purpose built village for miners of Barnsley Pit ,  Looping around Athersely and Carlton the home of Coking in Yorkshire and around the old Pit Slag heaps before we get to our lowest point of the run at Cudworth,

We once again join the old pit railways lines and head around Lundwood before reaching the remnants of Stairfoot station where we can stop for a Macdonalds or grab and go if you prefer

We now head out towards Wombwell along a tarmac path before taking a sharp right and heading back on the old pit lines skirting Swaithe and back to the start
