The River Deben 'Source to Sea' route covers almost 38 miles from the river’s source in Mickfield, Suffolk, to the sea at Felixstowe Ferry, closely following the Deben’s winding path through picturesque riverside landscapes.
Beginning in Mickfield, the route traces gentle farmland streams towards Debenham, a village notable for its historic medieval architecture. Continuing downstream, the river widens near Kettleborough, flowing quietly through rural countryside. At Ufford, the Deben gains strength, passing scenic water meadows.
Entering Melton, the landscape opens into lush floodplains before reaching Woodbridge, a bustling market town famed for its historic working Tide Mill and waterfront promenade. From here, the route moves towards Martlesham Creek, where tidal influences emerge amid reed beds and marshlands rich in wildlife.
At Waldringfield, panoramic estuary views unfold as the river dramatically widens, hosting sailing boats and abundant birdlife. Finally, the route concludes at Felixstowe Ferry, where the Deben meets the North Sea.
Special thanks to S. Pye for his research on the universally accepted source of the River Deben and Nick Cottam for his walking maps that were helpful when planning the early parts of the route.
