Description

The Erie Canalway is a National Heritage Corridor that spans 360 miles across New York state between Albany and Buffalo.

Built between 1817 and 1825, the original Erie Canal traversed 363 miles, overcoming hills with 83 lift locks. It was the longest man-made waterway and the greatest public works project in North America.

Now the canal can be explored by paddling the water trail, or by enjoying the canalway on bike or foot.  More than 80% of the canalway is off-road.  An interactive map is available at this New York State Canals Map site or at this Cycle the Erie Canal site.
