Description

This 1.5 mile trail has a trail head that is rather well hidden within the grounds of Coginchaug Regional High School. It ambles gently through the woods finishing 1.5 miles away from the start. There is a red and blue trail you can use an alternative route back to the start so that you can make this a more interesting 2.5 mile loop. This property was given to CFPA by Howard Brigham Field, Jr after his death in 1999. Mr. Field was a conservationist and longtime resident of Durham who loved the property and wanted it to be protected in perpetuity for the community. Members of the Field family still maintain an important connection to the property today.

Stone walls, cedar posts, and remnants of wire fencing indicate that the property was once agricultural land. Abandoned at the end of the 19th century, the farm fields subsequently grew into forest. Today, the dominant ecological process is forest succession. The wooded property consists of a variety of mixed hardwood trees which provide important wildlife habitat.
