Route: GR738, La Haute Traversée de Belledonne (France)

Location
France
Distance
132.8 km
Description

Standard route:

"I didn't really think of an FKT when I started the route because I thought it would already be an FKT and faster. Since it is such an aesthetic line/traverse of a massif with a clear start (Station of Aigebelle) and finish (Place of Vizille) and it hasn't been submitted I decided to do it anyway. The route is similar to the L'Echappee Belle race, but contrary to the race it takes some alternative paths and does descent less to parkings."

Variante Alpine:

This variant would preserve the spirit of a full north-to-south crossing of the Belledonne range while favoring a more aesthetic, more technical, and more representative line of the alpine terrain characteristic of the massif.

The proposed route would notably include the following sections:

  • Croix de Belledonne,

  • Col de la Valloire,

  • Puy Gris,

  • Col de Morétan,

  • Les Grands Moulins summit,

  • Col du Grand Cucheron.

The objectives of this variant are multiple:

  • to follow a more logical alpine line along ridges and high mountain passes;

  • to include several major summits and passes historically associated with traversing the massif;

  • to enhance the mountain continuity of the route;

  • to propose a more technically demanding version consistent with the spirit of autonomy and fast progression inherent to alpine FKTs.

This variant is not intended to simplify or shorten the traverse, but rather to emphasize its mountain character through greater elevation gain, more technical terrain, and increased commitment.
