The Grande Traversée du Massif des Vosges is the first leading quality trail labelled in France.  This route was created in 1897 and crossed the Vosges mountains on the French - German boarder from north to South, indicated  by a red rectangle.

The route starts in Wissembourg on the GR 53 crosses the national part of the Northern Vosges before joining the GR5 to cross the national park of the Vosges Ballons.  The route finishes at the world famous citadel in Belfort with its Lion sculpted by Bartholdi.

all information of the trail can be found in numerous guides and websites - two of which are indicated below.

The route is typcially broken down into 19 stages for hikers.  A famous historic trail which merits an FKT !
