Description

While it's mainly done on skis in winter and in a multi-day fashion, crossing the Hardangervidda mountain plateau is a popular challenge in Norway. None other than Amundsen himself attempted to do it in preparation of his polar expeditions.

The running route was chosen to coincide with the last leg of the 350km MASSIV hike of Norway, that crosses four mountain ranges. It runs north to south, starting in Finse and finishing in Haukeliseter. On the way it passes several mountain lodges: Krækkja, Stigstuv, Sandhaug, Litlos, Hellevassbu. The entire route follows the trails of the Norwegian Trekking Association (DNT). Only right before the finish line does the trail dips below the altitude of 1000m over sea level, which, combined with the Nordic climate, yields a uniquely exposed and remote environment.
