Description

The Irish Munros is a list of the thirteen highest Irish mountain peaks with an elevation of over 3000 feet (914 metres) and with a minimum prominence of 15 metres. There are 13 such peaks in Ireland. The concept of the Irish Munros is taken from the Scottish Munros which is a list of peaks over 3000 feet that was compiled by Sir Hugh Munroe in 1891. The 13 Irish peaks are spread out over four Mountain ranges : The Wicklow Mountains; The Galtee Mountain Range; The MacGillycuddy's Reeks; and the Brandon Group. A suggested approach to climbing all thirteen peaks would require about 50 km of hiking together with about 4000 metres of climbing, while also travelling about 370 km between these mountain ranges, to reach the four trailheads to gain access to these 13 peaks. The time starts at the first trailhead, before the first ascent and ends at the trailhead after the final descent. The list of the thirteen highest Irish summits together with a suggested order of climbing is given at WalkJohnnyWalk.com.

Editor's note: a variation 'open course self-powered' has been added for those wishing to travel between trailheads by bicycle.
