Description

The Kangaroo Island Wilderness Trail (KIWT) is a 66 km point-to-point route located in the remote south-west corner of Kangaroo Island. The trail travels west to east, beginning at the Flinders Chase Visitor Centre and finishing at Kelly Hill Caves. For FKT purposes, where route options are available, the High Tide route must be taken to ensure consistency of times.

The trail passes through some of South Australia’s most spectacular protected landscapes, including Flinders Chase National Park, Cape Bouguer Wilderness Protection Area, and Kelly Hill Conservation Park. It offers an immersive wilderness experience shaped by the dramatic Southern Ocean coastline and pristine bushland and forest. Runners encounter a varied mix of inland forest paths, rugged coastal clifftops, technical beach sections, and remote stretches where self-sufficiency and preparation are essential.

Although the KIWT traverses isolated terrain, there are five designated campgrounds spaced along the route. Each provides water and shelter facilities, and use of these campgrounds is included within the required permit. The trail is well-defined but remains physically and mentally demanding due to its length, terrain variability, and exposure to coastal weather conditions, which can change rapidly.

The trail is operated by the National Parks & Wildlife Service of South Australia, and a booking/permit is mandatory. Numbers on the trail are limited to preserve the wilderness character and minimise environmental impact. Anyone intending to run the trail, including FKT attempts, must notify NPWS and complete the mandatory briefing. Engaging with park management ensures rangers are confident in a runner’s preparedness and helps maintain a positive relationship between the trail running community and park authorities.

The Kangaroo Island Wilderness Trail is a serious and rewarding undertaking. Combining remote coastal beauty, diverse terrain, and strict environmental stewardship, it stands as one of Australia’s premier wilderness trail experiences and a uniquely challenging FKT route.
