Vientiane Province hosts the Phou Khao Khouay National Protected Area (NPA). One of the highest mountains of this area is the Phou Kaonang (Phou meaning moutain in Lao). On this route you will ascent the moutain on its south-eastern side, climbing a 1000 meters towards 1147 meters of altitude. The official peak of the mountain is located on the northern side and rises to 1163 meters.
This route will guide you through local farmer roads, small slightly overgrown trails used by local hunters, open pine forest, and the Nam Mang 3 Reservoir.
Laos has multiple National Protected Areas that it is trying to preserve, making it a more popular hiking destination is a part of this effort.
