Description

This route follows the coastline of Long Island, NY from Shinnecock Inlet to Lake Montauk on the beach along the Atlantic Ocean. It is the longest stretch of unobstructed shoreline in New York. The route consists mainly of soft sand surfacing, and turns rocky after Ditch Plains Beach in Montauk, at ~mile 33. The rocks there are loose and round, which slow you down as they need be traversed carefully to avoid ankle rolls or other injury. Rocky beach shifts back to a combination of smaller rock and soft sand after rounding the lighthouse at ~mile 38 and begin heading NW. Occasionally there are cuts opened through the beach to flush local bays and ponds into the Atlantic Ocean. Be aware of 3 possible shallow water crossings at Mecox Bay, Sagg Pond, and Georgica Pond.
