Description

Starting high in the majestic Barrington Tops World Heritage mountain forests and finishing at sea level in the stunning coastal Myall Lakes area, the Tops to Myalls Heritage Walk is a feast for Runners and hikers. At only 300km north of Sydney, Australia, the 200km long trail rarely touches bitumen and takes you through Snow gums and towering Antarctic beech forests of the Tops, through extensive native state forests to coastal heaths, littoral rainforest of the Myall Lakes then finally vast deserted beach dunescapes before the finish at the sleepy town of Hawks Nest.

First opened in 1993, it has sadly fallen into disuse and the signage infrastructure is slowly decaying, land ownership has changed, paths have overgrown and a new Highway carved it in two. Once signage was a vital ingredient for a long distance trail but it has now been replaced with GPX files, so the opportunity to resurrect the trail is unencumbered by funding and just required some careful thought in regards to re-routing which has been done in conjunction with Federation Track founder Bill Avery. Only small revisions were required leaving largely intact a route that takes in an amazing plethora of ecosystems deep into the Wilderness. Start in the mountains and finish at the sea, or start at the sea and finish in the mountains - take your pick.
