Description

From 1880 well into the 20th century, Bangor and Portland Railway steam locomotives plied this corridor, serving nearby quarries. Conrail bought the line in 1976, only to close it five years later. Plainfield township then bought the corridor and built the trail.

The Plainfield Township Trail offers a fast, nearly flat FKT route measured at 6.9 miles one way (DCNR website) or 13.8 out and back between the Belfast Junction trailhead in Stockertown and the Buss Street trailhead in Pen Argyl. The elevation increases slowly from the Stockertown entrance going north. The surface is mostly asphalt and crushed stone with sections of heavier ballast at the northern end. Parking is available at both the northern and southern terminus. The FKT is for the out-and-back (yo-yo).
