The Rothaarsteig leads in north-south direction over the crest of the Rothaargebirge. The starting point is Brilon on the northeast edge of the Sauerland. Over the highest mountain North Rhine-Westphalia - the Langenberg (843m) - leads the Rothaarsteig at the source of the Ruhr past to Winterberg for Kahler Asten (842m). Here at the headwaters of the Lenne, the second major river in the Sauerland, the Rothaarsteig bends to the west and runs south of Schmallenberg the Rhine-Weser Tower. From the Rhine-Weser Tower, it is now back south through the Rothaarvorhöhen in Hilchenbach angle and further into the headwaters of Lahn, Sieg and Eder above Netphen. About the Haincher amount of Rothaarsteig ultimately controls to its destination, the Orange City Dillenburg with the imposing Wilhelmsturm.
