Description

If you enjoyed the Linville Gorge Wilderness Loop (22 Miles), this route is on par with it, in almost every way.

Start the route at Camp Daniel Boone or Big East Fork Trailhead.

  • Starting from CDB puts a crux climb at the end.
  • Starting from BEF TH puts all the climbing in the beginning half.

The route description follows the CDB start beta.

This loop links up some of the most iconic views and trails in Shining Rock. Starting from CDB climb up the Art Loeb to Black Balsam then drop to the MST, past Skinny Dip Falls. Continue on until the Big East Fork descent. Follow the river to the BEF TH. run the road for a minute to get to the Shining Creek Path Trailhead. You can Climb Shining Creek Trail, or Old Butt, both are valid, just aesthetic preferences, really. From Shining Rock Gap drop little east fork back down to Camp Daniel Boone.

It's not recommended to do this route in the summertime. There is a lot of overgrowth on pretty much all the trails. I'm hoping that this FKT is a welcome addition for folks since it is significantly easier logsitically without the need for a shuttle. While it doesn't have the history or prestige of the Art Loeb, the route is an instant classic and doesn't let up. Each segment offers up a beautiful and different vibe. The aesthetic variation and rugged terrain keeps the traveler engaged, frustrated or in awe for the whole course. Cherish the few moments of flow and move as gracefully as possible through the rest! Feel free to reach out with any questions --- Enjoy!
