This route is designed to mimic the creation of Stonehenge. From the Blue Stones in the Preseli hills to the Sarcen stone in West Wood to Stonehenge itself.. The start point of the Waun Mawn standing stones isn't signed but very obvious when you see it. It takes in costal - mountain - rolling countryside and woodland. It incorporates, Waun Mawn, Avebury as well as Stonehenge which are internationally siginficant stone circles, all part of ancient British history and (apart from Waun Mawn) English Heritage sites.
It starts at the Waun Mawn standing stones in the Preseli hills where the blue stones are from following the Landsker Borderlands trail. It roughly follows the coast through St Clears, Camarthen and Bury Port giving great views of the sea. Along the Millennium costal Path past Swansea and then into the southern Brecon Beacons giving a more mountaious element. The route uses the old bridge to cross into Enlgand where it uses the Kennet and Avon, Monarchs, Ridgeway, White Horse and other national trails.
Along the Kennet and Avon canal you pass the Caen Locks which are the longest continous line of canal locks in the country.
Going via Avebury it leads to West Wood near Marlborough. this is where the Sarcen stones came from. From here it crosses rolling Wiltshire chalk land and crosses over Salisbury Plain the largest natural area of chalk land in Europe to finish at Stonehendge itself.
The route is mostly trail with a mix of some road. There has been a 24 hour garage plotted every 20-30 miles to help with self suppoorted efforts. The map shows 276 miles. When I did it it worked out at 300. This is due to the map straightlining some corners which makes it appear shorter. I probaly added 1-2 miles through nav error.
