Description

This is the runner’s version of one of Tasmania’s most popular multi-day hikes.

The Three Capes Track offers spectacular dolerite clifftop running, with dramatic drop-offs of over 200 metres. Along the way, you’ll enjoy epic views of the Southern Ocean and, on clear days, glimpses stretching toward Antarctica.

Running the track in September or October gives you the best chance of spotting migrating whales breaching offshore as they head south for the summer.

The route features hard-packed gravel, wooden boardwalks, forest sections, and stone stairs. It forms a loop, starting and finishing at Fortescue Bay carpark. This version skips the initial section that bushwalkers access by boat, making it fully runnable from start to finish (with a few steep hiking sections).

The route visits both Cape Pillar and Cape Hauy, taking in the most spectacular viewpoints along the way.

There are two huts on the route, each with excellent, reliable drinking water available from taps.

Note: The route must be run in a counter-clockwise direction to prevent the spread of Phytophthora Root Rot
