The classic approach to the Truchas Peaks most commonly and consistently used by locals, tagging each of the five "summits" that comprise the group (North Truchas, Medio Truchas, West Truchas, South Truchas or Truchas Peak, and Little South Truchas). A steady trail leads to the scenic Trampas Lakes before a steep and challenging climb up a north-facing couloir to arrive on the ridge just east of Sheepshead Peak. From there the route follows the ridgeline to the east, summitting UN 12900, before following the ridge south toward N. Truchas and Medio Truchas. The approach to N. Tuchas features a short but impressive (and exposed!) climb. From Medio Truchas one follows a spur on the ridgeline to West Truchas, doubling back to Medio Truchas before continuing south along the ridge to Truchas Peak or South Truchas and Little South Truchas Peaks. From Little South one "simply" follows the ridgeline back to the north and west, before descending to Trampas Lakes and returning along the sooth trail back to the Trampas Lakes TH.
Unlike the other, established FKT route for "Truchas Peak" this route includes all five "summits" considered part of this unique and inspiring group of mountains in northern New Mexico. It starts from a different trailhead, winding it's way up significantly different terrain in a distinct canyon, and follows a considerably more challenging and lengthy section of exposed and technical ridgeline.
