This route crosses Washington Island in a way that hits many of the features of the island. First, you have to take a ferry to the island. The route starts at the ferry dock and then heads inland through a wooded area. You then come across the more populated area of the island, although it is pretty sparsely populated. There are plenty of little shops and cafes along the way. One of the first features that you will hit is the church called the Stavkirke. This is one of 8 stave churches in the US and a beautiful piece of architecture. It is always open and worth a quick peep! Then, you will come across the lavender farm; and, if you hit it just right, you will definitely get to smell the lavender as you run along the route. Continuing along, you will come across the tower at Mountain Park, which is the high point on the island. It's a great place to get in a nice leg workout. Next, you will run to the Karfi Ferry which can take you to another island and state park, Rock Island State Park. Then, it's time to turn around and make your way back. But, you will first come across Schoolhouse Beach which doesn't have sand but has smoothed limestone rocks. Now, it's time to turn back south to the dock. Along the way are plenty of places to refuel and rehydrate. There are cafes and a market that are great to stop in. The locals are extremely friendly and wave when they pass you on the road. Part of the beauty of this route is that you are able to see features of the island that others miss when they are driving or riding bike. For example, all of the various wildflowers, or the stonewalls built by hand, or the various scents of lavender or linden or balsam. Overall, this is just a fun route to run and enjoy a different type of island life.
