Description

The Wellsville Cone-Quest is a Euro-Style FKT, starting at the old Gothic Church on the Wellsville town square (4,541'), running to the towering peak above the village (9,356' Wellsville Cone) and back.  It is best done between the last week of May through June (depending on snow conditions), or September-October.  Note there is no water along this route, but usually there is harvestable snow into the first weeks of June.

Start at the east entrance of the Wellsville Tabernacle. Touch the door, start your watch, and head south through the adjacent park to 100 Street.  From here you may take any route you'd like 2 miles through town to the Murray Farm Trailhead (but if you want the Strava Segment, follow the GPS track).  At Murray Farm, stay right and join the Wide Canyon Trail.  At mile 4.5 you'll crest the head of Wide Canyon, and a short decline to join the Rattlesnake Trail (don't miss this turn on the return route). Follow the steep and schwacky Rattlesnake Trail (watch for snakes) to the saddle east of Box Elder Peak.  Tag the peak if you want (short out-and-back), but the goal is Wellsville Cone, now fully visible to the north.  Drop down to the saddle above Brushy Canyon, and climb back up a few hundred feet to the Cone.  Stay on the marked trail, it's tempting to shortcut your way to the Cone but the trail will wrap around from the north and get you there.  Tag the cairn on the peak, take in the grandeur and re-trace your route to the Tabernacle.  Just remember to keep some gas in the tank for the climb back up to Box Elder Peak.  Note: In town, the GPS track takes a slightly different course to avoid a nasty little hill a few blocks from the finish.  Who needs that?

Congratulations!  Take a courtesy cool-down shower in the splash pad next to the Tabernacle (if the season permits), and get an ice cream at the Wellsville Cone Ice Cream (what else would they call it?) shop a few steps north of the Tabernacle on the corner.
