Route: North Fork Mountain Trail (WV)

Location
West Virginia, US
Distance
24.3 mi
Description

Robert Rives posted the route:

The North Fork Mountain Trail (NFMT) is a ~24-mile long trail that follows the ridgeline of North Fork Mountain in the Spruce Knob-Seneca Rocks National Recreation Area in northeastern West Virginia. The northern terminus is located on Smoke Hole Rd, off of Highway 55/28 and the southern terminus lies at the crest of the North Fork ridge on Highway 33. If I'm not mistaken, Outside Magazine once listed this as the best trail in West Virginia (debatable). More information on the NFMT can be found here:

Going for the solo unsupported female FKT on Sunday, May 16, running the uphill way, north to south.

Planning the first (documented) unsupported out & back attempt. Water is clearly the main challenge. I'm leaning toward a Northern start so I can tackle the major hill first and align with existing FKT's. This would make the (supposed) spring at the Northern end useless and the spring at the 11mi mark essential. If dry, I'll turn back and enjoy some time at Chimney Top. If flowing, I'll carry enough water for the ~24mi to the Southern end and back. As a hiker/backpacker, I'll maintain a slow/steady pace and plan to camp. My goal is to finish safely and set an initial FKT.

Successfully completed. Ended up finishing in one day instead of camping overnight. Submitting info today.
