Description

The Migizi Loop is a paved trail around Pike Bay near the town of Cass Lake in northern Minnesota. Migizi is the Ojibwe (Chippewa) word for bald eagle. The Migizi trail system is mostly contained inside Chippewa National Forest, with a small section of trail running through the town of Cass Lake. Pike Bay is part of the larger Cass Lake on the Mississippi River, a popular resort and boating area in the summer. The Migizi trail system has a small sidetrail leading to Norway Beach that is not part of the Migizi Loop.

This paved trail is popular with cyclists. It goes through deciduous forests and large stands of red and white pines which provide shade on hot summer days. The main trailheads for the loop are across from the Cass Lake Wayside Rest on Highway 2 and the South Pike Bay Picnic Area. There are other spots near road crossings that seem to be generally accepted parking areas as well. The eastern 2.8 miles of the loop are shared with the 49 mile Heartland State Trail.
