A much longer option (about 29km each way) is to run from the Shut-In TH off Hwy 191 (Brevard Rd).

This run starts at the French Broad river, (which is the third oldest river in the world and flows north) then run to the TOP of Mount Pisgah at an elevation of 5,721’. In honor of the Pitchell runners, start with a shot of whiskey (recommended, not required), put your foot in the French Broad and start you timer. Run under 191 and then pick up the Mountains to Sea Trail. Run to the parking lot of Mount Pisgah, take a right and run to the top of Mount Pisgah. Stop your timer when both feet are on the observation deck. Distance: 17.83 miles with an elevation gain of 6,220”.
