Description

Locally known as the “ManHump” or “Camelsfield” Challenge, this connection in the Green Mountains is a coveted traverse by backpackers. The route is a section of the Long Trail connecting Mount Mansfield and Camels Hump summits totaling roughly 30 miles. Rob Rives, former Green Mountain Club coordinator, heard that the traverse first came about when a caretaker on Mt. Mansfield accepted a fill-in shift on Camels Hump the next morning and hiked all night to get there in time for the shift.
In available postings, speed record thru-hikers have typically rested within the section so, the more efficient times are as follows:
7/12/2006: Time Seaver 10.5 hours, self supported
2017: Rob Rives 8 hours 21 minutes
9/8/2019: Emily Stitt & Benjamin Feinson 7 hours 39 minutes
9/13/2019: Lorne Currier 7 hours 37 minutes
Note: Due to the varying access points to each summit, the times have been recorded summit to summit.
