The Path follows the river valley downstream and links the Icknield Way path, which it crosses at Stetchworth, with Sudbury and the Essex Way at Manningtree passing through some of the most attractive country in East Anglia, including Constable country towards the end around East Bergholt. It provides part of the E2 E-Route. The waymarked Bury to Clare Walk (19 miles and on OS mapping) provides a link from the Path at Clare Castle to Bury St Edmunds (see St Edmund Way).
