Description

The Evan's Notch Loop is located in the White Mountains on the border of Maine and New Hampshire, and summits 8 of the prominent peaks straddling the notch. It is recommended that the route be done clockwise to avoid having to climb down the big slabs of South Baldface. In the order of doing this clockwise, you will hit the summits of South Baldface, North Baldface, Eagle Crag, Meader, West Royce, and East Royce. You will then descend down into the notch, cross it, then continue up the other side of the notch to Speckled Mountain, and finally to Blueberry Mountain. You will then descend back down to Shell Pond and Route 113 to the start/finish. Depending on the time of year, the route contains very little water (until you reach the Cold River water crossing coming down East Royce, about 14 miles in), so be prepared with enough water. This loop and variations of it have been popular with backpackers, but offers a great challenge for those who are up to it, and looking to complete it within a day. Also, if it's a hot day, don't forget to cool off and take a jump into the refreshing clear waters at Emerald Pool.
