Description

The GA dumbassery (GAD) overlaps with both the GA Loop and the GA Death Loop, however, GAD is longer, steeper and covers more north GA trails in addition to some of the most fun FSR's. GAD is a loop and starts at Woody gap on the AT:

  • From Woody gap head towards the Duncan Ridge trail (DRT) junction.
  • Follow the DRT until you reach the Coosa Backcountry trail junction. Hop on Coosa and follow the Coosa loop route counterclockwise until you reach the DRT again. Turn right on DRT and head towards Coosa bald.
  • From Coosa bald follow the DRT and BMT (do not go down to Skeenah gap), pass the swinging bridge and head to three forks.
  • From three forks, follow the AT to Springer Mountain.
  • A little past the Springer summit, to your left, take a short (but steep) one mile bushwhack south towards the top of the Bull mountain loop.
  • Once you reach the Bull mountain loop, follow it counterclockwise until you reach the Bull mountain parking lot.
  • From the parking lot, head towards the Jake mountain parking lot and follow the Jake mountain loop counterclockwise until it intersects FS 28-1.
  • Hop on FS 28-1 until it reaches Hightower Church road. Turn left on Hightower church road and head towards Camp Merrill.
  • From Camp Merrill, hop onto Cooper gap road until it reaches Blue Ridge road and Coopers gap.
  • Turn right on Blue Ridge road and follow it until you reach Gooch gap.
  • Hop on Gooch gap and head back to Woody via the AT.

The loop has approximately thirteen miles of FS roads most of it from FS 28-1 to Gooch gap (approx. 12 miles). Aside from primitive camping spots, the FSR segments are largely uninhabited. The rest of the loop is trail. There is one creek crossing that will get your feet wet (about two miles after you have passed the Jake mountain parking lot).

The loop cover the following trails:

  • The AT
  • The Coosa Backcountry trail
  • The DRT
  • The BMT
  • The Bull mountain trail
  • The Jake mountain trail

and FSR's: FS 28-1, Coopers gap road, and Blue Ridge road.
