The Wildwood Trail [Portland], designated by the Secretary of the Interior as a National Recreation Trail, meanders for 30.2 breathtaking miles, from the southern end of the trail at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington Park to the Northwest terminus of the trail at Newberry Road. Starting at the Vietnam Memorial/Oregon Zoo, the trail is marked every quarter-mile by blue, diamond-shaped blazes stenciled onto trees about six feet from the ground. The mile markers are located approximately two feet above the blue diamond, and show the distance from the Zoo/Vietnam Memorial trailhead. The Wildwood enters Forest Park proper when it crosses West Burnside St. at about Mile 3.

The Wildwood Trail has a Strava segment, which indicates that it's more like 26 miles (vs. 30.2 stated above).

Hello! I'm attempting a women's unsupported out-and-back FKT on Wildwood Trail tomorrow, April 2nd, 2020. I'm planning an early start from the south end, in order to avoid the most popular parts of the trail during peak foot traffic hours to maintain safe social distancing. When I do encounter other runners or hikers, I'll make my presence known and step off the trail to give a wide berth (6ft+) to others, per Forest Park Conservancy's and CDC's recommendations. This won't exactly be an all-out effort, but since there is no women's out-and-back FKT that I am aware of, I'd like to put something on the board. For me, this is mostly about spending a day outside in the forest.

Forest Park Conservancy stated that their trails are open during this time. From their most recent Covid-19 update, posted 3/19/20: "We encourage our community of Forest Park users to get outside in nature but to do so responsibly." https://forestparkconservancy.org/close-to-home-forest-parks-trails-in-the-time-of-coronavirus/

For my personal safety, I will share my live tracking info and exact start time with the FKT site runners.

I'm happy to report that my Wildwood out-and-back run went well! I began at 5:00am from the sign by the Veteran's Memorial parking lot, up to the north end trailhead on Newberry, and finished back at the south end at 4:53pm with a time of 11:53:43.

This was my longest unsupported run (carrying all my food and water) by far; the previous being the ~40 mile Timberline Trail around Mt. Hood last summer. Overall it was pretty smooth sailing. I took one teeny wrong turn near the beginning but corrected it by turning around and picking back up where I left off. About two miles in, when it was still dark, in I came face to face with a beautiful owl perched on a footbridge just a few feet in front of me. I had never been that up close to an owl before. I felt like I was really taking my time in the first half and the miles just flew by. I reached the north trailhead in 5:53 and change. On the way back south, I rarely stopped at all and really felt like I was hoofing it, so was surprised when it took me about six minutes longer than the first half in 5:59. My feet and knees were pretty achey in the second half, I think from the additional impact from carrying more stuff than I usually do. I was pretty focused in the last 8 miles, and felt motivated to finish in under 12 hours, so I felt good about the final push at the end, even with all the climbing. There were some other people out on the trail, but everyone (including me) was pretty good about giving each other a lot of space. Since it's a single track trail, that usually meant one person climbing a step or two up the hill/embankment to one side. Overall the conditions were pretty good. Cool, sometimes rainy, sometimes sunny. I'd say about 1/5th of the trail was muddy/sloppy so I took my time through those parts. Not a bad way to spend the day!

It's interesting that relatively few people have run the trail in the south-to-north direction. Personally, I find this preferable because the section from Germantown to Newberry Road is a lot less hectic at midday compared to Pittock and Arboretum. I've heard differing opinions on which way is “physically” harder, but I think it's just about equal.

I recently ran 3:46:07 for S2N: https://www.strava.com/activities/3782375576/segments/27196775690259811…

Does anyone know of a faster S2N time?

Anyone know of attempts to go E2E2E2E? (3x) I'm strongly considering going for it on 10/16 (Friday, heading into Saturday)

I had a different ~100 miler in mind for this year, but... we all had different plans for 2020. :)

Alright, tonight's the night... will post to Strava or Spot. If the 1 or 2 way times were any slower, I wouldn't be going for this one haha. Woo!

Just kidding! I got scared off by the cold. The new plan is to E2Ex2 tomorrow.
