The route is described by "Den Norske Turistforening" (DNT) and goes through the Mountain Massives of Breheimen, Jotunheimen, Skarvheimen and Hardangervidda. It passes 18 mountain huts along the way. The start goes from Sota Sæter and ends at Haukelisæter.

The route is marked with red T`s and the terrain is very rocky for the majority of the route. Crossing Hardangervidda in the southern part has some sections with faster terrain.
Editors note 2026: The route between Fannaråkhytta and Sognefjellshytta has traditionally been done crossing the Fannaråk glacier with guides from Fannaråkhytta that typically have 1 departure a day. The glacier is shrinking and regular guiding across the glacier will eventually stop, as it will become natural to follow the edge east of the glacier. There is no marked trail there now, but for FKT purposes it is more convenient and recommended to go around the glacier rather than soloing the glacier without a guide. GPX track now reflects the route around the glacier.
