Description

The Heart Attack Loop is a challenging 12.28 mi hike in the Lincoln National Forest east of Alamogordo, NM, that begins with a dramatic 2,100 ft drop over 3.2 mi down Alamo Canyon from Alamo Peak. After short jog south on West Side Road you arrive at the grueling Heart Attack Canyon. This is a difficult climb of 1,416 ft in 1.3 mi. If you make it that far, it's only another 380 ft up to a spectacular view of the Tularosa Basin and White Sands National Park. Then enjoy the remaining 4.45 mi over relatively easy terrain through lush forest and elk-strew meadows back to the trail head and bask in your accomplishment!
