Description

Nevado Ojos del Salado (6893m) is the second highest peak in South America. It is on the border between Chile and Argentina, and can be climbed from either side.

From the Chile side, the logical start point is the large Refugio Claudio Lucero (a.k.a. Refugio Murray), at 4527m, or from the Atacama Base Camp at 5250m. From there it is about 27km with 2366m of elevation gain to the top. Permanent mountain refuges are built on most camps and are reachable in 4x4 vehicles.

From the Argentina side, the logical start point is to set up a basecamp in El Arenal at 5500m. From there it is about 7km with 1400m of elevation gain to the top. Reaching to El Arenal is a long approach through inhospitable land.
