The large radio tower cube at the top of Mount Umunhum is visible from San Jose and surrounding areas. The idea of this route is to run from the Bay (Alviso Marina County Park) to the top of the mountain. The destination should be visible for much of the way.
It's a surprisingly straightforward route description: Guadalupe River Trail bike path, a couple of streets over to Meridian Ave, then a long way south on Meridian to the Mine Hill trailhead (Almaden Quicksilver park). Take trails all the way up to the top.
There is no water on the trails, so have a plan before heading up the hill.
(September 2022) Admin note: Mike Hedman proposed a different route focused more on trails saying "This route variation is a little longer than the original, but bypasses a lot of running on city streets. The route branches off from the original around mile 11.8, near the beginning of the Meridian Road segment, and then covers the length of the Los Gatos Creek Trail. The route then continues into Sierra Azul Preserve, up the Limekiln Trail to Woods Trail, and then rejoins the original route up Barlow Road towards the summit." This is the gpx file shown and the "set course" variation on this page. Marcy Beard's route can still be viewed from the numerous athletes who have ran that route but will be changed to "open course" since it was essentially the shortest distance between the two points anyway.

I'm planning to run across/speed-hike up from the Bay to Mt Um (or as Buzz suggested, Batoum) tomorrow.
