Route: Mt Elbert (CO)

Location
Colorado, US
Distance
9.7 mi
Vertical Gain
4,500 ft
Description

Mt Elbert (14,440') is Colorado's highest peak.  The most popular route on this very popular peak is via the Northeast Ridge from Halfmoon TH, which gains 4700 vertical feet in about 4.75 miles.  The ascent of this route has a Strava segment. (Editor's note 1/9/25: this segment reflects a prior version of the route).

Editor's Note: Many Colorado 14ers should not be considered “backcountry” where you go anywhere you want; their popularity can create a plethora of braided social paths that lasts for decades in the fragile tundra.  So if there is a trail, please stay on it. Hundreds of volunteers with the Fourteeners Initiative work hard to protect our mountain environment.

Editor's Note (1/9/25): Since the above-treeline trail work is now completed, athletes are expected to follow the trail as outlined by the US Forest Service. Since this updated trail adds a significant-enough distance to the FKT route, a new variation has been posted. Athletes who FKT'd before and during the period of trail work (using the prior route) will maintain their FKT. Athletes who FKT'd during the period of trail work (using the updated route) will have their efforts posted under the new variation. Strava segments do not necessarily reflect accepted FKT routes.
