Oak Openings is part of Toledo's Metroparks system. The 16-mile yellow-blazed Scout Trail is one of the longer trails in the area.
The North Central State Trail is not only one of the newest recreational trails in Michigan but the longest improved rail-trail, stretching 61.9 miles from Gaylord to Mackinaw City. Much of it is like any other rail-trail in northern Michigan; a flat, easy ride along a crushed limestone surface through woods and farms and pass trout streams.
The Bay de Noc/Grand Island Trail is a 39+ mile trail that parallels the Whitefish River, starting from 1/2 to 2 miles east of the river. The trail follows the approximate location of an ancient Chippewa Indian portage route used to carry canoes and supplies between Lake Superior and Lake Michigan. Following the river bluff for a considerable distance, it offers hikers, bikers and horse riders many extended views to the west across the Whitefish River Valley.
The Adventure Hiking Trail is a rugged loop through the limestone hills of southern Indiana, taking in hardwood forest, cliff views, and creeks, seldom missing the chance for a big climb or descent. It is a challenge in any season, though probably most runnable from late fall through late spring. The trail is well marked and generally well maintained, though there are plenty of opportunities for wrong turns, and wind and ice storms can drop trees on the trail any time of year.
