Start on Highway 23 North at the bottom of the Martha Creek trail.  Continue up the trail for about 7 km to where the trail starts to flatten, then turn right and bushwhack uphill to the SE ridge of Sale Mountain.  Alternatively, stay on the trail for about another 1.5 km to where you can turn right onto the Sale Mountain SE ridge trail.  Once on the ridge, continue SE towards Mt. Saint Cyr, either bypassing it through the Mt. Dickey/Mt. Saint Cyr pass, or climbing up and passing through the Latvian Col on the SW ridge of Mt. Saint Cyr.  Continue south across the lower west face of Mt.

The Romans and Reivers Route follows old Roman roads, forest tracks, drove roads and short sections of quiet lane through the heart of the notorious Reivers country through the Southern Uplands.  The route runs from Ae Village to the north of Dumfries to just outside Hawick.
