Description

This north to south route on the International Appalachian Trail includes old logging roads and newer mountain trail sections. Access is via the Shin Pond / Grand Lake Road (Patten, ME). Starting at the Haskell Gate of the Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument, it largely follows the valley of the East Branch of the Penobscot River as it flows south from Matagamon Lake. Short side trails lead to various and scenic waterfalls and a few campsites. Eventually it bares toward the southwest, tracking along hiking trails and climbs over Lunksoos and Deasey Mountains.

The route starts at the Weichtalhaus in Höllental. You can park your car for free there and might wanna use it as a personal aid station after the first long descend. The first mountain top of the route is Klosterwappen on top of Schneeberg. Therefore you start going up Weichtalklamm on the right hand side of the hut. It is a narrow canyon at some sections with chains and ladders as support. no need for any special gear, just hold on to whatever is provided. The ascend passes Kientalerhütte later on and finishes with a long uphill on top of Schneeberg.
