India Venster

Description

The India Venster trail offers sensational views, enhanced by the dramatic setting and striking rock-formations. City views along the first part give way to sea views on the upper section. The route leads up an imposing part of Table Mountain, threading through steep and dramatic terrain that seems unclimbable from below. The India Venster hike involves scrambling and exposure to heights. The route follows a well-defined trail, rocky and mostly uneven, with big rock steps on the steep sections.

McCarthy Road

Description

A famous Alaskan road, due to its gravel length being no-mans-land for most Alaskan car rental companies.

The gravel section starts in the town of Chitina and runs across a series of rivers (Copper, Kuskulana, Gilahina, etc.), following the old Copper River and Northwestern Railway grade (completed in 1911 to service the mining town of Kennecott). It ends at the footbridge that leads across the Kennicott River to McCarthy proper.

Since it's an old railroad bed, there's very little in the way of steep sections, just a 59 mile, mostly flat, potholed, dusty, Alaskan road.
