Der Weg misst 90 km und 3.582 Höhenmeter. Der Schwierigkeitsgrad ist im mittleren Bereich angesiedelt. Er führt durch schattenreiche Wälder und über aussichtsreiche Höhen mit malerischen Ausblicken. Auf den Erzählspuren Heinrich Hansjakobs führt der "Große Hansjakobweg" durch eine der schönsten Mittelgebirgslandschaften Deutschlands. Following the river upstream from the historic harbour village of Pill close to the river's mouth, the River Avon Trail passes through the spectacular Avon Gorge, the modern city and ancient river port of Bristol, some very beautiful countryside to reach the elegant Georgian city of Bath.

The River Avon Trail is part of the Kennet and Avon Walk which goes across country from Reading on the Thames to the Severn Estuary.
