The Izu peninsula is a volcanically formed mountainous peninsula about 50 miles west of Tokyo. Lying in Shizuoka prefecture, it’s home to remarkable geological features and phenomenal views of Mt. Fuji, Japan’s tallest mountain. The coastline has numerous pristine white sand beaches with crystal clear blue waters, as well as rugged volcanic cliffs and forested trails. Izu is world renowned for it’s diverse underwater environment and is a popular diving location in Japan.

This fantastic trail loop allows for great views of the Bay along with rolling hills of nearby farms. There are free-range cows and horses to be spotted through the winding path next to the farms. The path is relatively easy to follow with a few spots where you need to go over or through a cattle gate. The path is dirt and has a bit of elevation in the beginning portion. Healthy local foliage encompasses much of the trail as well. There are bathrooms at the trailhead as well as a water refill station, parking is easy if you arrive early. 

Mount Porte Crayon is the 4th most prominent mountain in West Virginia and the 6th highest peak in the state, located in the Roaring Plains area of the Dolly Sods wilderness. The summit’s high point of 4,770 feet is attained by following the Flatrock Run trail for approximately 5 miles, then bushwhacking for about a mile through rhododendron and thickly populated red spruce trees that stand shoulder width apart. The elevation gain is over 2,300 feet.
