Starting on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea in Menton, this South-to-North crossing of the French Alps follows the legendary “Grande Traversée des Alpes” but with a unique twist. Instead of taking the classic GR 5 from the start, the route begins with the wilder and more mountainous GR 52, plunging deep into the heart of Mercantour National Park — a land of ibex, chamois, and rock engravings in the ancient Vallée des Merveilles.

The Grand Teton – Modern Route

Starting from Lupine Meadows Trailhead (6,732 ft), follow the Valley Trail toward the Amphitheater Lake Trail. At the 1.7-mile Junction, continue straight toward Amphitheater, Surprise, and Delta Lakes, up a series of well-built switchbacks. At the 3-mile Junction, take a sharp left onto the Garnet Canyon Trail, leading to Garnet Canyon and the high peaks.

The Helena Ridge Challenge connects the five major ridges in Helena: Mt. Helena ridge, Wakina Sky, Rodney ridge, Mt. Ascension, and Eddy McClure. It's a showcase of some of the best trails that Helena has to offer!

You can leave snacks/ water in your car at the Dump Gulch TH and refill at approx. mile 13.
