The Burgwaldpfad (translates to "castle-forest-trail") is a roughly 50k long trail that connects the towns of Frankenberg in the north and Marburg at the southern end. It's a  well marked hiking trail, mainly on forrest roads, that leads through the name giving Burgwald. This is the landscape the famous brothers Grimm had as inspiration for their fairy tales when they lived in Marburg at the beginning of the 19th century: Dark and silent forests, mixed up with rural cultural landscape. Scattered in between little villages, creeks, rivers and castles (most of them just ruins today).

This Route is used in the famous Western States 100 Mi Endurance Run. And out & back run between Placer High School in Auburn Ca where the WS100 finishes, and follow the modern day route run in 2019 to Squaw Valley, and return to Auburn 200.4 miles. 

This walk leaves Heathfield by the path beside the antique shop called “The Greenhouse”. This path goes downhill to the old railway station from there the walk continues to the Cuckoo Trail. The Cuckoo Trail is followed for a short distance to Sandy Cross.

The traverse of the Hochtorgruppe: Großer Ödstein - Planspitze, 14,6km/2465m D+/2822m D-/UIAA3. The official Route starts in Johnbach (parking lot before the gravel road) and ends at Kummerbrücke. 
First you climb Großer Ödstein via Kirchengrat, then you climb Festkogel, Hochtor (highest point of the traverse), Rosskuppe and the last summit Planspitze. Afterwards down to the Kummerbrücke via Wasserfallweg, a really steep and technical downhill.

While most of the country was preparing to party on the eve of the new Millenium in 1999, Nigel Jenkins of Axe Valley Runners had a different sort of celebration in mind. In horrendous weather he was out on Dartmoor, southern England's most remote and open space, notching up the first completion of a new round.
