Description

The "Via Ausonia" was a Roman road that ran from Trier across the Hunsrück region to Bingen am Rhein, connecting to the Rhine Valley Road and continuing on to Mainz (Mogontiacum). The route was already in use as a trade and transport artery during Roman times. Its current course follows the route of a carriage journey undertaken by the Roman poet Ausonius in 371 AD. The trail connects the Mosel and the Rhine and runs across the high plateau of the Hunsrück.
