What You Need to Know After 12 years and three record attempts, Joe “Stringbean” McConaughy broke the supported record on the John Muir Trail—arguably the most competitive Fastest Known Time (FKT) in the world. He finished the 223-mile route through California’s Sierra Nevada in two days, 16 hours, and 15 seconds to shave nearly three and a half hours off of François D’Haene’s nine-year-old record. McConaughy attributes his 12 years of experience on the route along with a stellar crew willing to tackle complicated logistics and pace up to 40-mile sections to his success. He and one of his pacers, Caroline Himbert (who set her own FKT on the JMT this summer), spoke with author Emily Halnon for this story.

Sam! Incredible effort! This route is no joke, and you did an oversight job with it. Looking forward to the trip report!

Amy Ansbaugh here!  I’m starting a supported attempt to run/hike the Florida Trail.  Starting in Big Cypress Dec. 28 2021

Yes, good suggestion; that was an excellent effort.  It actually was on the Preliminary List, but with 4 other New England FKTs, and a very large overall list to manage, it fell off the Final list (along with 10 others).  Sorry.
  • Sam Kottoor:
Hello all!  A few days later now, and I'm still in shock from the absolute bewildering insanity that this adventure was. Thank you all so much for the love and support you've shown. I'm so thrilled to have completed this crossing. I took the last… read more »
