What You Need to Know After 12 years and three record attempts, Joe “Stringbean” McConaughy broke the supported record on the John Muir Trail—arguably the most competitive Fastest Known Time (FKT) in the world. He finished the 223-mile route through California’s Sierra Nevada in two days, 16 hours, and 15 seconds to shave nearly three and a half hours off of François D’Haene’s nine-year-old record. McConaughy attributes his 12 years of experience on the route along with a stellar crew willing to tackle complicated logistics and pace up to 40-mile sections to his success. He and one of his pacers, Caroline Himbert (who set her own FKT on the JMT this summer), spoke with author Emily Halnon for this story.

Going to try set a somewhat competitive male Unsupported FKT for the Great South West Walk, starting tomorrow 14 April 2022. Ideally will get it done in under 4 days if all goes to plan!
  • Daniel L Dollar:
Is there another GPX file for this route? I've downloaded the current file and it seems to be corrupted.
  • NickThinks:
Apparently the actual name of this route is Ilse's Trifecta and the firetower isn't necessary to have said you've done the route. If you want the FKT, however, doing the route is recommended.

Good deal. I look forward to seeing you do this. Remember races don't count in many cases. In this case the route is not quite the same as the races put on by race director Steve Durbin.
